2008 Oscar Nominations Predictions
Who will be nominated?

It’s that time again! Nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards are announced Thursday morning. Below, my completely uninformed predictions:

Best Picture:
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Frost/Nixon
Milk
Revolutionary Road
Slumdog Millionaire

Possible upsets: The Dark Knight, The Reader

The low-down: Against popular advice, I still think traditional Oscar voters will nominate Road over the less conventional but monstrously successful Knight. Stay tuned.

Best Actress:
Anne Hathaway, Rachel Getting Married
Sally Hawkins, Happy-Go-Lucky
Angelina Jolie, Changeling
Meryl Streep, Doubt
Kate Winslet, Revolutionary Road

Possible upsets: Melissa Leo, Frozen River; Kristin Scott Thomas I’ve Loved You So Long

The low-down: Hawkins has won more awards than fellow indie leads Leo and Scott Thomas, but any of those three could end up getting this slot. The rest seem to be set in stone.

Best Actor:
Clint Eastwood, Gran Torino
Frank Langella, Frost/Nixon
Sean Penn, Milk
Brad Pitt, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler

Possible upsets: Leonardo DiCaprio, Revolutionary Road; Richard Jenkins, The Visitor

The low-down: This remains a three-way race between Langella, Penn and Rourke, but Eastwood seems guaranteed a lot. I predict Button momentum keeps Pitt in the game over DiCaprio. Jenkins, perfect in Visitor, remains a lonshot.

Best Supporting Actress:
Penelope Cruz, Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Viola Davis, Doubt
Taraji P. Henson, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
Kate Winslet, The Reader

Possible upsets: Amy Adams, Doubt; Freida Pinto, Slumdog Millionaire

The low-down: Winslet is a lead in The Reader but a double nomination guarantees her already quite secure victory in the lead category this year.

Best Supporting Actor:
Josh Brolin, Milk
Robert Downey, Jr., Tropic Thunder
Philip Seymour Hoffman, Doubt
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
Dev Patel, Slumdog Millionaire

Possible upsets: Ralph Fiennes, The Duchess; James Franco, Milk

The low-down: Expect Slumdog fans to squeeze Patel in over Fiennes and Franco.
