It seems like it’s been awhile since I’ve brought you some delicious tidbits from the world of horror films… probably because it has been. But have no fear, The Horror Hotstove has returned for its 2006 debut column!
And what a way to kick off the first column of 2006 than with a franchise that I wrote about in my debut column back in the summer of 2004: Friday the 13th. Like its on-screen bad guy counterpart, this franchise seemingly does not want to die. Since the much-anticipated and highly successful Freddy vs. Jason in 2003, many rumors have popped up regarding the future of both Mr. Voorhees and Mr. Krueger. In fact, this time last year there was talk of Quentin Tarantino helming a future Friday the 13th flick. While that remains to be seen (although highly unlikely), nothing has really come into fruition.
Until maybe now.
Variety has reported that New Line Cinema has begun the development of a Friday the 13th script that might possibly explain more about Jason’s origins. In fact, a release date of Friday, October 13, 2006 has been (appropriately) thrown around. This would be the 12th film to include the Jason character… but the 11th straight-up Jason film. I won’t even begin to imagine the titling nightmare New Line might have with this one!
Whether this is just another fan-boy’s dream, or the real deal is hard to say. But for someone who constantly complains about the lack of originality in Hollywood nowadays, I’d be the first in line to see another Jason flick. Cut me some slack, I grew up on the stuff!

2006 rolled in with an extremely hyped-up horror flick: Hostel (read my review here). If you haven’t seen it yet, the film basically centers around two post-grads who go backpacking across Europe looking for girls and sex. After 45 minutes of softcore pornography and gratuitously gratuitous nudity, the two guys find themselves trapped in a location where you can do anything to anyone you please… for a price. The even shorter version: 90 minutes of sex and torture.
Things (hopefully) look to go up from there however. The next two months have some potentially great horror flicks lined up for release in theaters. Here are some of the more notables…
February 3 – When a Stranger Calls (REMAKE)
February 3 – Tamara (Limited)
February 10 – Final Destination 3
February 24 – Ultraviolet
March 3 – Pulse (REMAKE)
March 10 – The Hills Have Eyes (REMAKE)
March 24 – Stay Alive
And don’t forget about some possible gems from the direct-to-video department…
February 7 – The Dark Hours
February 14 – Zombie Honeymoon
February 28 – Katiebird: Certifiable Crazy Person
February 28 – Joshua
February 28 – Fear of Clowns
Yes, even though I have that irrational fear of “Those With Red Noses That We Don’t Speak Of”, I’ll still force myself to sit through Fear of Clowns. Guess I’m a bit of a masochist.
