Welcome to the latest meeting of the SNL alumni and the Adam Sandler acting company (some of the players are members of both groups).  This time the setting for their gathering is a sequel to one of Sandler’s earlier films.  That’s a first for Sandler, a sequel to one of his films.

“Donny Berger” is an 8th grade boy who is as the Van Halen song says, “hot for teacher.”  Teacher happens to be “Mary McGarricle” (Eva Amurri Martino) and after a proposition from Donny in the hallway, she sentences him to a month in detention as punishment.  But in detention she seduces him and their torrid affair goes on unchecked until they are discovered in a very public coupling.

Normally I wouldn’t be packing two films together into one review, but in the case of Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison, I’m making an exception because they are being released together in a special “collection” DVD set.

Now, let me say off the bat that I’m not a Adam Sandler fan. I have friends who are, but I just don’t think most of his movies are all that funny. And in this collection, I half liked it and half disliked it. That means I enjoyed Happy Gilmore, but found Billy Madison to pretty much represent everything I didn’t like about Sandler’s movies as well as some of his Saturday Night Live skits.
