“If ‘Trek’ is a hit, we’d love to do a series of films – a regular event. Look at James Bond’s films. They’ve been around since the early sixties.” – Gene Roddenberry

If only the Great Bird of the Galaxy, Mr. Gene Roddenberry had lived to see his vision going strong, five decades after the first episode of the TV series “Star Trek” first aired.  Star Trek Beyond is the third film in the reboot of the movie franchise and while it isn’t as excellent as the initial Star Trek from 2009, it is very pleasing to the eye.

From the brilliant minds of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright comes the third film in their “Cornetto Trilogy”, The World’s End.  The other films in the trilogy are of course Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.  All three are comedies and while they feature many of the same players, they portray different characters in each.

‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ fails horribly by not boldly going somewhere new

Writer: Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof
Director: J.J. Abrams

The Star Trek series of films has become known for having an even-odd rule.  If it’s an even-numbered entry, it’s a good one. If not, then no such luck. Into Darkness is the 12th in the franchise. According to my calculator, 12 is divisible by 2 with no remainder, which would mean that it’s an even number.

Except this one is no good.

For those who love the Star Trek universe, there is good news and bad news.  The bad news is that writers Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof are going where others have gone before.  The good news is that it worked and in fact, it works well.

This will probably be some kind of warped record. First, this film was reviewed months ago when it was released in England (read that review here). Then, our own Horror Guru took a look at it (read that review here), when it was released in theaters here in the States.

Now, it’s my turn. With the release of Shaun of the Dead on DVD, I’m offering my take on the film.
