‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ mimics ‘Dark Knight Rises’

Star Trek Into Darkness gets its first teaser poster… and it’s got some striking similarities to the original Dark Knight Rises‘ teaser.

The last film in the Dark Knight trilogy had its first poster showed broken buildings crumbling down with a bleak, dark sky shaped to look like the Batman logo. In similar fashion, the Star Trek poster features the rubble cut into the familiar triangular design of the Starfleet symbol.

Standing alone on the rubble is Star Trek Into Darkness‘ supposedly villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (who I still think is playing Gary Mitchell, a villain who appeared in the original series).

Does this mean the teaser trailer coming later this month will have Pike in a hospital bed speaking to someone with a blinking light as we see Kirk battle a villain we only see from behind? All of which is set to a mysterious chant that later turns out to be “Live Long and Prosper.”

The poster follows the release of the film’s official synopsis (and a really, really brief clip shared by Abrams):

In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

As our heroes are propelled into an epic chess game of life and death, love will be challenged, friendships will be torn apart, and sacrifices must be made for the only family Kirk has left: his crew.

The film is set to hit screens May 17, 2013.

  1. It’s funny, I’ve actually tried to go back and reexamine Enterprise. It wasn’t quite as bad as it felt at the time, but Star Trek to a degree was getting tired then. Plus, after so many years of it running back-to-back, things felt repetitive.

I’ve heard of the comics tie-in. I may even try and pick it up.

  2. I had to google “Xindi.” I was a lapsed Trek fan when Enterprise aired.

On a side note, IDW is publishing a Star Trek comic that takes place in the new timeline. As I understand it, Orci works as the creative director on the book. The first two issues adapted “Where No Man’s Gone Before” and I seem to remember Orci saying the comic series would tie into the next movie directly in a fashion similar to how Countdown connected to 2009’s Trek.
